Joseph Robinson, Jr., the oldest son of Joseph and Sylvia Robinson, founders of seminal Rap label Sugar Hill Records, died Saturday (July 11), NorthJersey.com reports.

Robinson was 53 years old and passed away from cancer. The family declined to identify what type of cancer Robinson battled.

Robinson, Jr. handled royalties and music publishing for the label.

He also toured and performed with Sugarhill Gang after Master Gee left.

The Rap trio put the label on the map with 1979’s landmark single “Rapper’s Delight.”

Leland, one of Joseph Jr.’s brothers, called him a father figure after their parents died.

HipHopDX would like to extend its condolences to the family and friends of Joseph Robinson, Jr.
