Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Chris Kelly had a childhood friend by the name of Chris Smith. While the two were playing video games in Atlanta’s Greenbriar Mall, music producer Jermaine Dupri discovered the two boys, and saw a certain style in them. What JD saw would be what became the group Kris Kross.
In 1992, they debuted with the album “Totally Krossed Out”. The boys set fashion trends with their style of wearing clothes backwards, and the album birthed the mega-hit that would be one the biggest hip-hop singles to date, Jump.
Kris Kross went on to tour with Michael Jackson, release a second platinum album, and continue to make music until 2001. Mac Daddy went on to study sound engineering, and started his own record label, C.CO Records. The group performed their final show at the So So Def 20th Anniversary in 2013.
Mac Daddy struggled with a drug addiction as he grew older, and passed away due to a drug overdose in 2013.
We like to define Chris Kelly as the artist and important figure in hip-hop that he was, so today we remember and salute Mr. Mac Daddy himself, Chris Kelly!
