Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Michael Bivens is an original member of the group New Edition. The boy band, which included members Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, Ronnie Devoe, and Rickey Bell dominated the early 80s with hits like Candy Girl, Cool It Now, and Mr Telephone Man.
In 1990, Bell, Bivins, and DeVoe formed a group consisting of just them, while Tresvant and Brown pursued solo careers. Bel Bev DeVoe combined hip-hop, funk, soul, and pop music. It was a break from New Edition’s more traditional R&B sound, and showed that the guy’s were coming of age. Their more mature sound was reflected in the mega-hits, Poison, I Thought It Was Me, and Do Me.
Biv started his own record label and management firm, Biv 10 Entertainment, around the same time. He helped launch the careers of groups such as 702, ABC, MC Brains, and Boyz II Men. Bivins continues to enjoy success today as an entertainer, and regularly tours with New Edition and Bel Biv DeVoe.
We salute and wish a Happy Birthday to Michael Bivins!
