Born Michael L. Tyler in New Orleans, Louisiana in the 12th ward, he stayed connected to his roots and after graduation high school, Mystikal enlisted in the Army in 1988. He was a combat engineer and served our country during the Gulf War. Mystikal spent time in a military prision for allegedly being off base at a time when he shouldn’t have been. During this time, he began crafting his unique vocal delivery; one that he said was influenced by drill sergeants during his time in the army.
Mystikal released his debut on the New Orleans label “Big Boy” records and his debut sold three hundred thousand copies. It earned the attention of Jive records, who signed him and in 1996 released his official major label debut “Mind of Mystikal” and it became a major hit in rap’s underground.
The next move for Mystikal would be to join Master P’s No Limit Records and his stock began to rise in hip hop. His album “Unpredictable” helped build the rapper a substantial following and eventually the album went platinum. Mystikal’s “Let’s Get Ready” album in 2000 really gave him the spotlight, when his song Danger became his first number one song in hip hop and the album debuting at number one.
The new millennium was filled with legal drama than albums for Mystikal. After serving time in prision in 2004, Mysitkal returned to the game and continues to work in the studio and touring around the country and remains one of the unique voices in southern hip hop to this day.
Today we salute and wish a happy birthday to Mystikal!
