Drum roll, please…

TIME magazine has revealed its list for Person of the Year and in the top spot is Angela Merkel, the current Chancellor of Germany. Following Merkel, the shortlist includes ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Donald Trump, Black Lives Matter activists, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, the CEO of Uber, and Caitlyn Jenner.

Merkel is the first woman to be named TIME’s Person of the Year since 1986, and the fourth since the magazine began the annual list in 1927.

1936: Wallis Warfield Simpson

Following two prior divorces, Simpson’s marriage to King Edward VIII was sure to cause crisis in the United Kingdom. As a result, King Edward VIII gave up the throne to be with her.

1952: Queen Elizabeth II

TIME person of the year

In honor of her succession to the throne following her father’s death, TIME named Queen Elizabeth II their Person of the Year in 1952.

1986: Corazon Aquino

TIME person of the year

Despite her lack of political experience, Aquino was able to become President of the Philippines and was known to many as the “Mother of the Nation.”

2015: Angela Merkel

TIME person of the year

During Merkel’s decade of reign in Germany, her powerful leadership and political ability have gained her the nicknames “Merkiavelli” and “Black Widow.”
