As public figures begin to come out of the woodwork to support Donald Trump, it appears that some high schoolers in Indiana share the same sentiment.
During a rival basketball game against a largely Latino team on Friday, the Catholic school students allegedly held up a poster of Trump’s face and chanted “build a wall,” alluding to the GOP presidential candidate’s radical immigration policy. According to ABC, the students at Andrean High School said they meant no harm, but rival school Bishop Noll Institute is taking the situation seriously.
Bishop Noll released a statement that read in part, “The accusations being leveled against Andrean are being taken very seriously by Bishop Noll Institute … This is a teachable moment for everyone about responsible speech, social media, and sportsmanship. Perhaps last night’s incident was an unfortunate byproduct of irresponsible speech in today’s political arena.”
Rick Piwowarski, the principal at Andrean High, put out a statement, saying that the behavior was “not consistent with the expectations we hold for our students. The rivalry between the two schools stems from years of history and healthy competition. Unfortunately, some students in our “Super Fan” section engaged in behavior that was emotionally charged and inappropriate.”
The Indy Star reports that Principal Piwowarski has met with officials from the Diocese in Gary, Indiana and Bishop Noll to speak about the racially charged situation.
According to ABC, basketball players on both teams didn’t hear the chants because they were too focused on the game.
