A 16-year-old boy who vowed that athletics would be his path out of Chicago and away from its rampant violence was shot and killed Sunday evening in front of his home. Andre Taylor, a multi-sport athlete at Percy Julian High School, was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the forehead on his front lawn, DNAInfo Chicago reports.

The publication reports that neighbors of Taylor say that the boy did not appear to be involved in gang activity that has ravaged much of the city. Instead, one neighbor described him as a “typical teenager” while another neighbor said Taylor was a “good kid.”

Details are still developing and haven’t been wholly confirmed, but Taylor was reportedly living with his grandfather on the 10000 block of South Indiana Avenue. He and his younger brother lived with their grandfather after their mother reportedly died in a 2008 auto accident. Along with football, Taylor also played basketball and was on the swim team.

Just ahead of Taylor’s death, the boy’s aunt, Nydia Bossie, told DNAInfo that her nephew walked his girlfriend to a nearby bus stop before returning to the block. Neighbors heard gunshots and screams around 7:50 PM local time, alerting them that something tragic had occurred.

The Chicago Sun-Times’ Homicide Watch site stated that Taylor was shot in the Rosemorr section of the city while DNAInfo reported the neighborhood as Roseland.

A search for the suspect or suspects is still ongoing by Chicago Police.
