July 1st at 12:01am EST is the start of NBA free agency. That’s when teams can open up the pocketbook and start openly courting players who are not under contract with anyone. The belle of the ball this year is Oklahoma City Thunder F Kevin Durant. Who couldn’t use a 27 year-old 6’9″ scoring machine that happens to be a 7X All-Star.
Initially I thought because the Houston Rockets have the services of Durant’s former OKC teammate James Harden, that the chances of seeing him suit up for H-Town were very strong. The Rockets have the cap space necessary to sign him to a $26M a year deal thanks to C Dwight Howard opting out of his contract. A deal that would have paid Howard $23M this year.
But I just read a report from ESPN’s Marc Stein stating that so far only the Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, Boston Celtics, Miami Heats and the Los Angeles Clippers and his incumbent team the OKC Thunder have secured a face to face visit.
If he chooses not to make Space City his home, Lord please don’t let him go to the Spurs.
