Over the weekend, the 2016 BET Hip Hop Awards were taped at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre near Atlanta and West Coast OG Snoop Dogg was honored.

Uncle Snoop took home the “I Am Hip-Hop” award. He accepted this honor humbly as he encouraged young rappers to keep pushing the culture forward. “To all the young rappers in the game, a lot of people don’t understand you. Y’all are misunderstood,” he said with Kendrick Lamar watching at his side. “I was misunderstood at the beginning. So you got to keep pushing, be original and diverse. Hip-hop was created many years ago and it’s taken people so many places. You have to be who you are.”

Lamar later acknowledged The Doggfather’s contributions to the game. “He mastered the game through tests and challenges that earned him the respect of a college professor, except his game came from the streets,” Lamar said. “He put (me) on game, so I would avoid the same pitfalls… ”

The BET Hip Hop Awards airs on Oct. 4th.
