A Detroit mother of four was arrested on Tuesday after police found two of her children frozen to death in their apartment building’s deep freezer.

The 36-year-old mother was taken into police custody after a bailiff arrived at her home to issue an eviction notice. She also confessed to killing her children, but didn’t explain how.

The mother, who hasn’t yet been identified, according to CBS Detroit, was reportedly behind on her rent and owed over $2,000 to the Martin Luther King Apartments in the Lafayette and Larned area. The officer says the brother and sister, ages 11 and 14, were in a plastic bag in the freezer available for use by all tenants in the low-income housing building.

Officials say neighbors were aware of the mother’s financial problems, but her behavior towards her children was just as alarming. She allegedly homeschooled the kids in an effort to keep them close to her. She was also always worried that something bad was going to happen to them. Neighbors claim they hadn’t seen the victims in over a year.

Neighbor Tori Childs expressed her condolences:

“I’m angry at her for doing that,” said Childs. “So you kill your kids and then leave them – so the kids died cold, lonely, it’s just not right. “My heart hurts for them, like, I wish I could see Debbie and the other baby so I could just hug them,” said Childs after seeing the bodies removed from the home.

The woman’s 11-year-old and 17-year-old children were placed in productive custody.
