A tragedy has hit the Houston Rockets extended family. R.J. Adelman, the 44-year-old former Rockets assistant and son of former head coach Rick Adelman was killed in a February 2 accident. He was hit while crossing the street.

A spokesman for the Houston Police Department confirmed the former Rockets assistant was struck by an 80-year-old female driver. She was questioned and later released with no charges filed. The investigation is still on-going.

The Houston Rockets released Thursday the following statement on Adelman’s death:

“The Rockets organization is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former assistant coach R.J. Adelman. Our thoughts and prayers are with Rick, Mary Kay, and the entire Adelman family during this very difficult time.”

R.J. worked for the Seattle Supersonics, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves over the course of his career, ranging from assistant video coordinator to scout to assistant head coach to director of player personnel. He was an assistant coach while his father served as the head man of the Rockets from 2007 to 2011 and then worked with him as the director of player personnel with the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2011 to 2014. R.J. was living in Houston at the time of the accident.
